You know, just a little light reading

Ohh you know, just a little light reading.

About a year ago, I set a goal for myself to read more books.  Grad school had pretty much taken all joy out of picking up a book to read, but I wanted to get back into the habit of reading for pleasure.

So what did I do? I took tiny steps to build this new habit.  I picked a book and set it on my nightstand so it was easy to grab.  For the first week, I set the goal that every night before bed, I would read at least one page (Yes, one page.  I said small steps, right?).

Once this started to become a ritual, I naturally began to choose to crawl into bed a few minutes earlier so I could read more before I fell asleep (and, for those who know me well, they know = lights out before 10pm <insert grandma emoji>).

Now, I read almost every night before I go to sleep, and have started to foster a new habit of reading mindset and "how-to-kick-ass" type books early in the morning to get my day started (tip gleaned from my girl Neghar Fonooni).  

You can't embrace a new habit without taking that first step.  And even if it may seem insignificant at the time, small steps are big steps.
